Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle in Bangkok

Living in a big, bustling city like Bangkok has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

On the one hand, residents have access to plenty of resources such as quality gyms, fitness clubs, health clinics and open spaces like parks as well as beautiful rural areas.

On the other hand, there’s the challenge of city pollution from traffic as well as the temptation to eat fast food and head out to the restaurant or bar rather than cook at home. As with many big cities, making the best health choices is important.

Healthy Living in Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and a popular destination for people from all over the world. Not only is it a safe place to live, it has a low cost of living compared with many other capital cities elsewhere in the world.

Covering just over 600 square miles and with a population of more than 8 million people, Bangkok has seen rapid growth over the last few decades. It’s cosmopolitan, lively and has a stable economy so it’s no wonder there is also a thriving expat community living there.

Although it’s an exciting place to set up home, it’s easy to get into bad health habits in a city like Bangkok. It’s essential to have strategies in place to maintain a decent diet, exercise regularly and get access to the best healthcare when needed.

Diet

There’s been a challenge in the city over recent years with almost half of Bangkok residents considered overweight, according to this article in the Bangkok Post.

Obesity and not maintaining a healthy weight causes problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Regular poor food choices also have a significant impact on general health and wellbeing.

The good news is that many Bangkok residents are making changes and there are plenty of options for those living in the city to do likewise.

Eating Out vs Eating at Home

For those spending some time in Bangkok, eating out every day can be pretty unhealthy. While there are hundreds of fast food joints and tasty street food options in the city, there is also a thriving healthy restaurant and café sector.

It’s okay to eat out once in a while but it’s important not to make this the rule rather than the exception.

Eating at home is the other option and it’s very easy to do. There are lots of local supermarkets and fresh produce open markets. Supermarkets like Villa Market, Big C and Tesco Lotus have stocks of fresh foods but there are also plenty of organic and wholefood shops to choose from.

The big benefit of cooking at home, of course, is that people can not only control portion size but the quality of the ingredients.

Exercise: Staying Fit in Bangkok

There are plenty of opportunities to get fit, learn a new skill or take a walk in one of the many parks in the city.

Kickboxing Classes and Gyms

One of the big obsessions in Bangkok is Muay Thai or Thai boxing which is Thailand’s national sport. There are hundreds of clubs that offer Muay Thai training programs and it’s an excellent way to stay active. It’s also a sport that’s very popular with the city’s expat community and is of course a useful skill to learn.

There is an endless number of gyms and fitness clubs, especially towards the center of the city. In short, staying fit in Bangkok is not a problem.

Outdoor Exercise in Bangkok and Outside the City

If going to the gym isn’t exciting enough, there are several walking tours for tourists as well as green spaces such as Lumpini Park and Benjakiti Park to take advantage of. Lumpini park in particular is extremely popular amongst runners, especially during the early morning and evening times when the temperature is a bit cooler.

Nearby Khao Yai National Park includes 2,000 square kilometers of forest and grassland with amazing wildlife such as elephants, gibbons and bears. There are hiking and cycling trails as well as amazing waterfalls.
